Finally going home...

4/27 Well...I had that feeling, you know the one in your gut, if you tell anyone ahead of time they will think you are certifiable, but I somehow knew this flight would have issues. And so it did. Everything started out okay:Rapid Rover was relatively on time, I must remember to pad my time when I book in the future, but I digress. Anyway, got through security, grabbed some breakfast and boarded the Miami bound flight to make the short 1 hour connection to my beloved St. Maarten. The travel gods had different plans. Once boarded and seemingly ready to go...the door of the play was not shut, the delay seemed to linger...then the pilot announced we have a mechanical issue...we should be on our way in 30 minutes or so. Already 25 minutes late, it was time to ask the dreaded question, what about my connection? The stewardess informed me after a bit of prodding, that they could not hold the sxm bound flight, so I would most likely miss my flight. UGH!!!!  No, I want to be there. I want to greet my friends, I want to help them rebuild. I want to go now! 5 hours and 2 Irish coffees later, I boarded the flight and departed for Miami, booked on tomorrow’s flight to SXM. A day late is better than never my sweet St. Maarten Land. I won’t lie, Yes...I cried. I was able to reach everyone on Island to cancel plans for Friday and Saturday morning and move them to the next day.

On the upside, American Airlines will be treating me to a night in Miami and some food vouchers. When I get back home that very well could be expanded to some flight vouchers as well. And I met some fun people along the way.

Amy, who is traveling with friends who made it to SXM today and happens to be staying at SBR. I am hoping to run in to them along the way. We cheered, sitting in the bar when it was finally past noon, just because the day had been so long already!

The fun guy I call 411, because he works for AA but was a passenger, and was giving us inside info about sticking with the flight we were on or baling for a different flight. He was on point, and funny.

The gamer who sat next to me on the flight and told me I can find Commander  Keen at GOG.Com (gold old games) That was a cool tip. He is headed to St. Thomas, but will also be stuck in Miami for the night.

We have plans to meet up at the hotel bar and enjoy the evening. Hoping that pans out. Rough start. But, Bob Marley sing it to me...Don’t worry about a thing, every little thing is gonna be alright.

Well, you won’t believe this!  We were diverted to Fort Myers to refuel...because we didn’t have enough to circle Miami because of weather!  What??? Can you say free flight voucher! I will be working on that when I get home.  I knew there was bad weather in Miami, why didn’t the airlines??? Sigh, what a long disappointing day!

The fun night in Miami?? Ha, got to hotel about 9 something...got some food, had a drink and called it a night. 8am I will start over again and be on the way to St. Maarten.

4/28/18
Travel today was smooth. Yeah for that. Had some anxiety about all of that , yesterday was just so bad. But...it was smooth and simple! Phew!!! Landing in SXM, hmm, first glimpse of the island through the window, just the color of the water... I teared up a bit. Yes, it’s still here. My heart and head, were wondering, how will it be? Am I going to lose my composure and sob? What right do I have? Seriously...get a grip woman!  The process was smooth. Walk from the plane to a tent and line up for immigration. Got a little teary eyed when I was standing waiting to enter the tent and saw into what was the beautiful Princess Juliana Airport Terminal. It was just devastated. Of course I knew that...but now I saw that, here with my eyes. I touched a pillar, and just said I am here, St. Maarten, I am here. It had been over a year, all because that bitch IRMA, interrupted life with her fury. I hope no island is ever faced with that horror again.

Immigration was smooth and efficient. The luggage process. Oh my!!! Try and ever get an american airport to work this hard to get you your luggage!  They load it from the plane on to the carts by hand. Then they drive it to the “arrivals tent” and unload it by hand. Then Luggage handlers roll it out, hoping the owner is right there. Some people are impatient and cross over the “boundary” to retrieve their own bags. Most wait until it’s their turn. It was about 6 people deep when we arrived, so I opted to wait until the crowd thinned.  As it turned out, Air France had arrived just before us, and it was quite a large group.

Once my bags were in hand we proceeded outside to attempt to find Porsche, our pre-arranged Taxi driver. As we exited the terminal a gentleman asked, do you need a taxi. I said, “Yes, but it is pre-arranged.”, He replied, “Oh, are you looking for Porsche?” I was stunned, he pointed, “She is right there.”  I hugged her, I don’t even know this woman. But she took the time to make it easy for us, and there it was. An uneventful ride to the hotel, got checked in, and it was time to prepare to meet Laura some friends who live on the island for Dinner at Snoopy’s.

Snoopy’s Ahh...what a great spot! So happy for Horse’s success so far. May he be given more as time goes on. His integrity and good character have won my support for many years. Met up with the Simply SXM folks. It was nice to put real people with the names and such. Jeff and Becky are among my favs so far.  The food was great. One of my friends was surprised to get the whole fish, Snapper. But it was very good. I had the Garlic Shrimp with fresh veggies and rice and beans. Wonderful! Horse said he grows his own spinach and his family makes sugar cane rum on Dominica.  Now see, that’s the kind of man I need. Motivated and hard working, but I digress. What a fun time! There was a Reggae band there. They were wonderful. The plan is to return for Cinco de Mayo. It will be my last night, I have to spend it there!

4/29 Sunday
Today was the History Tour with David of Seagrape Tours. What a great experience!  Did I retain even ⅓ of what he told me? No, of course not. But he was a fabulous guide. And showed me so many sights I had wanted to see. Due to the damage from Hurricane Irma, we were unable to go in to Fort Amsterdam, but we stopped at Belair Beach, and I did get a great photo of it. This is also the site where the Chinese resort is supposed to go. I hear that is now a thing of the past. I sure hope so. Sadly, it was also the beginning of seeing just how much damage was done, all over the island. He explained about the salt ponds, and how the island was formed. We stopped off at the Emilio Wilson Park which was oddly locked with a padlock. We found a back way to get in anyway. David explained about Emilio and what he had done for the island, including preserving the land from his plantation from over building. I saw the zip line for the first time, it’s not as bad as I thought it was. If the dutch locals are okay with it, then hopefully it is good for the Island. After that, it was on to the French side. Oh MY!!! The damage is still quite evident. There are signs of recovery everywhere, but one side to the other, the french side is still struggling. Fort Louis was open for visitation. It was quite a few steps up, but I am glad to say, not as many as it used to be. Yeah for shortcuts and tour guides!

After the tour there was time to relax on the beach at SBR before dinner at Avantika. This restaurant had been recommended many times but I had never gotten there. Finally, I made it!!! What a menu. It was hard to decide what to order, but I persevered and decided on Asparagus and Shrimp stir fry.  You can pick the level of spice from none to level 6. I went with my safe mild, cause that’s how I roll. I will make this one of my regular stops in the future. Delicious and fun staff!

4/30 Monday
Today was hmm, one of the main events I guess. Check off the box, I have been to Carnival in St. Maarten. I really wasn’t sure what to expect. The day started by taking my reliable Taxi to Carnival Village. I was supposed to meet a local friend there. When I called they said, oh, I thought you would be late. No, they weren’t there yet.  My wonderful cabbie, “I’m not leaving you here alone.” I laughed, and appreciated her company and guidance around the relatively empty carnival village. Porsche left me in the care of her friend the owner of Flemings and was on her way. JJ arrived, and we were off to watch the parade. Now, I had no idea at the time, or maybe it was some time in the middle of the day, that I was basically at the judges stand all day! JJ didn’t introduce me to any one that way. What a great day! They had an elevated viewing area that was covered. That was a great bonus, as standing in the sun all day would probably not have ended well for me. The costumes were beautiful. The music was fun. The people were happy!  They danced and smiled for miles and miles. There had been a lot of debate before Carnival this year, that due to the difficult circumstances caused by Irma, the festivities should be cancelled. But I was of the opinion, that after 8 months, these people needed their normal happiness, they needed the fun, the music, the socialization, THEY NEEDED CARNIVAL MORE THAN EVER BEFORE!!!!! I can not explain how happy it made me to be there, to watch this event and to share in the joy. We didn’t watch the parade end once, we watched it 3 times. Once at the viewing stand, then we walked over and watched it pass on front street by the Holland House, then we watched as it made it’s way in to Carnival Village. JJ got some soup, then we went on to our next adventure…

A moonlight walk from Le Galion to Orient and back. Well, after 7 hours of carnival, this was an ambitious undertaking. Hindsight said, duh you should have gone to Church on Monday...but this was fun, in a different way. About ½ way down Orient Beach, a group of us, said...go on...we will wait here. The people running the walk were not to keen on the idea. But we had stopped at a well lite area near Orient Village, and as growns up said, we will wait here. What a fun time, sitting on the beach laughing and enjoying good company.  When the group returned, we dragged ourselves up and walked back to Le Galion. The moonlit sky was beautiful. The surf was calm. I am glad that we did it, but my poor feet!  I ended up with a bad blister, and rubs on the back of both heels. When the day was over, 18,000 steps!

5/1 Tuesday

After a day like yesterday, there was only one thing to do today...lay low and chill at the resort!!! I have roamed all over this island with my friends, but right here, Simpson Bay Resort. Yep, that is my comfort zone. I know where I am. I know what to do, how to get a round, and the staff, accommodations and food are wonderful. Someday’s that’s all you need.

There was a bit of excitement at the pool. Seems that some NE Patriot fans, can’t lose with grace. This guy started calling Philadelphia, Filthy Philly. When he got called on it, he tried to back down...it was rather comical, since he was put in his place buy several die hard FEMALE Eagles fans!  Fly, Eagles, Fly!!!

After a day of luxury poolside, I decided dinner at Pineapple Pete’s was a good idea. All the times I had visited, I’d never gone there. Well, now I know why. The food was okay, but not as good as so many of the places that exist on St. Maarten. The vegetables that were served on the side of my Garlic Shrimp were bland, most likely frozen at some point. The friend I went out with had the Lobster Thermidor. It is what Pineapple Pete’s is know for, she said it was delicious, so maybe that is their deal, go with the signature...most expensive...dish.

5/2 Wednesday
Today’s adventure on St. Maarten...An awesome round the island Snorkeling excursion with Billy Bones Tours. What a BLAST!!! Simpson Bay Lagoon, Creole Rock, Tintamarre, Pinel, Grand Case, Maho, but it was raining so hard, no photos at Maho. But so much fun! Crazy Chris takes it to a whole new level! Captain Allen was amazing, dealing with all the weather, swells, and a few frightened passengers (no not me, I was loving it from start to finish, even in the rain) with great skill.  What a spectacular fun filled day! After a ride over from Philipsburg, we went through Simpsons Bay Lagoon. It was sad to see so many sunken, and half sunken boats. Some pushed up against the bridges and shores with people living in them.  Different stages of recovered, recovering, abandoned and waiting for Insurance. It will take time. Luckily, the Lagoon is healing, and there doesn’t seem to be any more fuel leaking. Next up, Creole Rock and Tintamarre. I had never been snorkeling, but today was the day to try it. Oh my goodness!!!  I saw fish, up close and personal, fish of different sizes and shapes and colors. Fish I have only seen in movies or books. Spiky sea urchins, I could go on and on. Next time, a water camera will go along for this adventure. And there will be a next time. The reefs are starting to grow back. I will also wear a shirt over my swimsuit, got a bit of a burn on my back. We left Tintamarre and headed to Pinel where the Iguanas rule the roost. They were pretty tame, and would even let you pet them if you wanted to. On my next visit, I think a full day on Pinel is in order.  There are 2 lovely restaurants, chairs and I could definitely walk around and enjoy the environment.  After our brief visit on Pinel it was off to Grand Case. Okay, that was a rough one to pull up to, even though the folks on the boat were happy and the music was playing, I was holding back tears. The only thing up and running, Rainbow Cafe. The food they served us, wasn’t what I would expect from Rainbow, but it was boat trip fare. It was good, just not french faire like I had hoped. After that we headed toward Maho Beach. As we traveled along it became clear that it was going to rain, not a passing shower, but a major downpour!  And it did, with a vengeance!  I figured, I have been in water all day, so I enjoyed!  I had hoped to see my friends plane that was arriving land, but we missed it by about 10 minutes. Oh well!  It was raining too hard for pictures anyway. We dropped the cruise passengers off in Philipsburg and then headed back to Simpson Bay. I would highly recommend Billy Bones Boat Charters to any one!

As I said my friend, I call her Mama, arrived today. So now the days will be different because she is an island expert!  Tonight we went to Jimbo’s for dinner.. I had shrimp fajitas. Always delicious. The margarita was wonderful too!  I could really go for one of those about now. And then off to Snoopy’s because, that is where it’s fun to be.

5/3 Thursday
Today we finally made it out for breakfast. It had been such a busy week so far, it was easier to just eat in the room. We were heading to the french side beaches today, so we stopped at Simpson Bay Yacht Club. As remembered, breakfast was delicious. We left SBYC and headed out. Having been on the tours earlier this week, I had seen a lot, but this was the first real view for Mama. Yeah, it’s hard to see. But you look real close, you remember the photos you saw right after that Bitch Irma tore through, and you realize how much progress has been made. Even though driving through Maho, you see shells of buildings, the reality is that it had to get torn down, to be rebuilt. Yes, my sweet St. Maarten, you are in the next phase. We drove through Maho, Cupecoy, stopped at Baie Rouge, Belmond La Sammon as we came around the curve, there they were...the cows that wander around unfenced these days,  in the road. Once the cows and bulls by the way, wandered out of the road we went on to Friars Bay Beach Club. Now this is what I am talking about, so very french. We rented chairs right by the surf and settled in for a lovely day. There were a few passing rain showers, but nothing to ruin our day. I found some sea glass, yeah!!! another goal for this trip. Who am I kidding, that will be a goal for every trip. Also found a tiny little conch shell that I snuck home, shhh! Today was indeed a true french meal. For lunch I had Coconut Shrimp with Mango Salsa and Mint. It was magnifique!!! I also managed to get a Carnival Coke Can. I know strange goals. But it’s the little things that I want to hold on to. On the way back to Simpson’s  Bay we drove through Grand Case. Oh wow!  As bad as it looked from the water side, it was 10 times worse from the street side. We drove on around through Philipsburg and back to the resort.

After a couple hours of rest and showers, it was off to Isola for dinner. Wow, what great renovations. The building is now enclosed, with a much nicer decor than it had before. We split a Ceasar Salad and Pizza. The salad was amazing. I could have just eaten that. The pizza was good, but could have been a crispier crust. After eating we popped  in to Red Piano. No one we knew was there or working so we went on to our favorite spot, Snoopys for Rock and Roll night. Some more good live music and good times!!!

5/4 Friday
It was time for another resort day. I stayed at SBR in the am by the marina pool. Life is tough when you have to decide which pool or which beach to spend the day at! I had a Shrimp Ceviche poolside before heading out. It was huge! If there was 1 shrimp, there were 30. And it was only $15. Mama drove me  to Philipsburg  to meet with my friend JJ at his store.I bought a new ring, to support JJ. He has worked so hard helping the people of St. Maarten, it only seems right to support his business, too. The ring, is gorgeous! A lovely blue and white diamond ring. Another reminder, I am a diamond, and should be treated as such. When JJ finished work, we went to the hardware store to pick out the new toilet for ML. Then it was on to the grocery store to buy groceries for MW who is caring for 19 children and 5 adults. JJ said what we purchased would cover about a month of food for them. We then stop off and delivered the food to MW’s. She was not there, so I didn’t get to meet her.  But I did get to meet the children. They were so adorable, and helped us unload the car of all the items. Then we stopped by the house that had the fire in French Quarter. JJ instructed them to get a quote for the necessary materials to repair the burned out house.  If they follow through on getting the quotes, we will donate the remaining funds that I had to help them rebuild.  After that we stopped at ML’s to drop off the suitcase of construction materials that I had brought. She was very happy to receive the help, and the suitcase. I will say, it was not easy to just go back to a fancy resort after seeing how people are living. Sure, their circumstances may not have been great before Irma, but the storm sure didn’t help them. Many families that lived in separate houses are now packed in to one house, or one area of a house that has a roof. I will continue to do what I can to help the people of St. Maarten. We all have our passions. I have found mine. I was back to SBR around 6:30. We went to dinner at Sale & Pepe. It was amazing. I had the Snapper with veggies and rice. They had an Osco Boco that looked fabulous, but I opted for the fish. Trying to stay healthy. Hahahaha... It poured rain, I mean poured rain while we were at dinner.  But nothing like our island friends had endured. Once the rain subsided, we found our way to Red Piano for Caribbean Night. Soca and Reggae music. Yes, I like this very much. And so much fun.

5/5 The last full day on the island. Yes, I am starting to feel that I will be heading home soon. The suitcase is just about packed before we headed out for the day.  Breakfast today at Zee Best, Mmmm. I had a crepe omelet and an Almond Croissant that I made Mama take a piece of. I promise I didn’t have to twist her arm very much. Then it was off to  Mullet Bay. That is one of the most beautiful beaches on St. Maarten. The left side is usually pretty calm, but the right side, the surf was breaking and rough...yes I walked the entire beach just to get photos of the different aspects of the beach. Bought a magnet bracelet from a local. The colors were pretty, blue of course, and yes, just giving back in another way. I know, I’ve said it before, those funny gut feelings, well I had one that day.  He was here, I could feel it. The jerk...There were a lot of locals there, so it wouldn’t be surprising. I didn’t see him, but I felt it. Sure enough, when we got back to SBR I had a message from him. Yes,  ignored it. He didn’t deserve me when he had me, after the events of the last year and however any months, he surely didn’t deserve me now. This being my last night, I wanted to spend it at Snoopy’s and it was Reggae night there, so YEAH!!! We had dinner there and I had the Garlic Shrimp again, because it is just that good. What a fun night. I danced, I was on the bar’s facebook live, I had a ball.  I gotta learn more about Soca Music. I have a specific stool there now, the owner promised to take good care of it for me, until I return.

5/6 Sunday Ugh Departure day! I hate it. I am heading back to my cell. We had lunch at the new place to be, Emilio’s. It  was wonderful. Of course Mama knows the Chef and manager of the place, she knows everyone! I really looked around the place, and took some picture, my friends who are looking to get married in St. Maarten next year, really should do it there. I had the Blueberry Pancakes, Mama had the Emilio Wilson Plate and our other friend had Hourves Ranchero.  The food was incredible. The environment is beautiful. It is right near the new zip line on the dutch side, so during the day that is a little distracting, but at night, that is not an issue at all. Yes, I gave in and cried. Mama thought it was because of the jerk, no, no, I am good there. I just can’t seem to help it. I am happy in St. Maarten. An inner peace of some kind, not so much at home. I gotta figure that out!

Well my 10 days, that became 9, have come to an end. It was amazing, it was fabulous, I am already planning and plotting my return. Forever in my heart you are my sweet St. Maarten Land.

Warm and Cold  Scottsdale, Sedona & Grand Canyon, AZ

Well, this past week I was supposed to be in my favorite place in the world, St. Maarten. Unfortunately flights are hard to find and places to stay, even harder...so my friend and I had to switch gears and go some place else.  I couldn't bring myself to go anywhere near the Caribbean so off to Arizona we went!  I had never been to Sedona or the Grand Canyon, so that is where I placed my hope in the silver lining.  What a great week it was...no not My Island...but a great week nonetheless. As it turned out, I got to see some family that I had no idea would be in AZ pretty cool, A cousin from Michigan, and a second cousin from Texas!

The trip started off with a bang, or maybe I should say a delay!  Due to some rough weather patterns our flight left about 90 minutes late. We used the time to grab lunch and be sure our phones were charged. Once we made our way to the Orange Tree Golf Resort we opted to stay in and have dinner there, a Prime Rib Special that hit the spot and made the decisions easy.  The irony of staying in this Resort, neither my friend nor I golf...but it was indeed lovely to look at.

Sunday morning we woke up EARLY! Of course our brains were in a time zone 3 hours a head of where we were, so we really just woke up on time. Since it was 6am we decided to go out to breakfast before searching out a location to watch the E A G L E S game.  We found a nice breakfast spot called Eggstasy. Their menu was unique with many amazing options. We split a Spinach Feta Omelet and Lemon Ricotta Pancakes. Oh my!!! The omelet was great, but the pancakes...SURPERB! I could have those every day I think.  Next stop was the local grocery store. It was just a brief stop to find a few days of breakfast and a couple snacks. It's vacation...no cooking allowed!  After hanging in the resort bar for a while to watch most of the Eagles game, yes it was really odd to watch at 10am it seemed time to catch a few rays by the pool before heading to dinner with family.

Picture
This morning we had breakfast at the resort, then went to Kierland Commons  to do a bit of shopping. It was a bit cloudy so we decided to take a drive to Jerome. Jerome is an eclectic little town sitting up in the Black Hills of AZ. We walked around town a bit before deciding on lunch at The Bordello of Jerome. The burgers were amazing! I had the special of the day: Barbeque Beef Burger with Sweet Potato Fries.    I wouldn't use quaint to describe this town. It had an air of old time cowboys and hints of being haunted. Clearly they have become a popular stop for people driving through central AZ.

We returned to Scottsdale after lunch and caught a few hours of late afternoon sun before heading over to Old Town to Grimaldi's Pizza. I think I had the best white pizza I have ever had. It was simple, just cheese, garlic and the oil that is used instead of red sauce.  The crust was nice and thin and crisp.

Picture
It was up and out early on Tuesday! Clouds were still hanging around as we headed off to the red rocks of Sedona.  Being that it was not sunny and bright I think I missed  the majesty at it's best. Even so it was still a beautiful sight to behold. Since our time was limited we took a Red Jeep Tour and hit the highlights with a brief over view.

As luck would have it, my cousin and his wife were also in Sedona so we grabbed lunch together At the Creekside American Bistro.  I enjoyed their beet salad. Trying to stay healthy and traveling are indeed a new life goal.

Picture
After lunch it was time to head out for the Grand Canyon. I won't even lie...it's a good thing the friend  I travel with is a road warrior. If I was driving the hairpin turns on 89A  we still might be there!  But she did a fantastic job and navigated those twists and turns with skill and a steady hand.  As we drove across Highway 40, getting near Highway 64, I noticed the smoke before the caution signs and thought oh boy this could be a problem. As it turns out, yes, I'm home and I have done some research, this was actually a planned event to keep the future risk down. I knew things like this were done, just didn't think when I first saw the huge plumb of smoke that it was "under control". The drive from Sedona, after 89A really wasn't bad, fyi for anyone thinking about doing the trip. We arrived in Tusayan, just outside the South Rim entrance to Grand Canyon National Park checked in to the hotel and hoped back in the car

Picture
We made it into the Park and boarded a bus just in time to get to Yaki Point for Sunset. I'm told now...I should have gone on a bus heading the other way. All I can say is where I was, wasn't crowed and it was the most beautiful thing I have seen in a very long time. As the sun set the rocks would change colors, so the images would be different. Truly with out a doubt one of the wonders of the world. Words just don't cut it, if you get the chance see it.

By the way, at night, as soon as that sun goes down, it was COLD!!!!

We headed for Plaza Bonita for a nice Mexican meal.  The atmosphere was fun, and the décor was colorful and enjoyable.

Picture
In the morning, it was back to the Grand Canyon after a quick meal at the hotel buffet. Because it seemed to be the less populated and developed area we drove the 22 miles up to the Desert View Watchtower. Along the way we saw a herd of Elk, about 5 or 6 of them, just off the road grazing for food. We weren't fast enough to get a picture of them, but WOW are they huge! The views, again words just can't describe the amazing sights. I did see the Colorado River down there. I am in awe, and would like to return again some day.

I know that my friend I was traveling with is more of a Beach and Pool person, so I balanced my desire to stay and see every nook and cranny with that reality. About 11 we hopped in the car to head back to Scottsdale. We decided on a whim to stop for lunch once we got back to highway 17. That was amusing, just as we made that decision we had passed Flagstaff...no going backwards so I started searching for places "near me".  Munds Park popped up as an option, so we took the exit. Well, there's not a lot going on in Munds Park this time of year. The private golf course...they didn't even want you on their property nonetheless to feed you lunch, so we opted for the local whole in the wall Pinewood Bar & Grill. A nice quick grilled cheese sandwich, and we were back at the resort in time for a couple hours by the pool! After that we decide to treat ourselves for dinner. The day of extremes, from frost on the windshield to sun at the pool; Grilled Cheese and Hotel Buffets to Fine Dining at Rusconi's Kitchen The menu was nice, it wasn't easy to decide. I went with the Apple Cider Glazed Pork Osso Bucca. I had never ordered that before. It was incredible!  Now that I know, I would not hesitate to order that type of entrée again. We splurged on dessert Dark Chocolate Bread Pudding with Salt Carmel Sauce. Mmmm...wish I had a bite of that right about now.

Picture

Today was a pool day. I have a funny way of laying in the sun, it involves a lot of shade!  But I enjoy the down time and read a book. That's always enjoyable as I rarely do things like that at home. That evening we decided to go back to Oldtown after all it was the "day of the Dead". The Oldtown Adobe Mission had a nice display explaining "Día de los Muertos". I never understood what it was about until this. What a great way to honor those who have passed on every year. We walked around, enjoyed the dancers and storytellers than made our way to Bandera for dinner. Again, it is time to  pick wisely we shared an Appetizer Grilled Brussel Sprouts and each had a  Macho Salad. The food was really good. You could smell the rotisserie chicken all around the area as it cooked.

It was indeed time to RELAX!!!  Thanks to my membership at Hand & Stone we had lovely massages at a great price, even while on vacation. Before the massages we went to a cute little place called The OINK Café for breakfast. The food was good, the atmosphere could be a bit better, but it was okay. What I found the most amusing was that they listed a "Flight of Bacon" on the menu. Basically a sampler of their 8 kinds of Bacon: Apple Cider, Applewood, Chef’s Choice, Hickory, Honey, Jalapeño, Pepper, Sugar Cured. I didn't order it, but I thought it was funny.  I had the Paradise Valley Omelet: Spinach, mushrooms, bacon, and cheddar cheese& Chai Tea Latte.  Then it was off to the massages, and an afternoon at the pool before my daughter and her husband came up to visit for the evening. We ended up at Grimaldi's again. Mmmm yes, really good Pizza!

It was time to go home!  Our last morning we went back to Eggstasy on the way to airport.  We just had to have the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes again. We also shared an Apple Brie Omelette with Chicken Sausage.  Even though this was not the way our week had originally been planned, in the sun and sand of St. Maarten, it was a fun adventure with lots of beautiful sights and some great food. Yes, I did indeed join a gym when I got home!!!

I had no idea as I wrote my last post just what horrors were about to happen in the Caribbean. I am mindful as I type this that the hurricane season is not over, not even close. Irma and then Marie spinning and swirling, Irma so strong that it drained the ocean of it's waters two different times.  Irma was a direct hit on the Island of St. Maarten. Many lost everything, many lost a lot, and most sorrowful of all some lost their lives. I am deeply saddened by it all.

The waters are not as blue...yet...they will be
The beaches are not as clean...yet...they will be
The buildings are not there...yet...they will be
The tourists are not welcome...yet...they will be
The water is not back on everywhere...yet...it will be
The roads are not all cleared...yet...they will be
The electric is not back on everywhere...yet...it will be
The airport isn't open...yet...it will be
The Palm fronds are not on the trees...yet...they will be
The cruise ships have not returned...yet...they will be
The restaurants are not up and running...yet...they will be
The curfew is not lifted...yet...but it will be

The people of St. Maarten are strong and resilient.  Already, just 21 days later they have begun rebuilding and getting life back to "normal".  Restaurants  have opened with limited menus. If nothing else but to be there to have fresh food for people. Prices are discounted. People have places to gather, to share, to support one another.  It will be a very long time before things get back to normal. With their economy being 100% dependent on tourism, it is imperative that they get back on their feet as quickly as possible. The Dutch motherland has come to their aid at a rapid pace.  My heart is a bit heavy knowing how much they are struggling.  I was relieved to hear from all of my friends that live on the island. They were born there, they will die there. They are native St. Maarteners.  I respect them so much. They band together and take care of those who need help. That's not always the same as those who want help. I understand that statement very well, I'm sure you do too! As soon as the time is right, as soon as it is deemed appropriate...I will be back my dear Sint Maarten. #SXMSTRONG

Natural phenomenons

The recent eclipse reminded me of the wonders of nature. I was like everyone else standing out side in mid-afternoon amazed at how dark it was. One of my co-workers had the cool NASA approved glasses so we actually got to look at the event happening, truly amazing!

But even if you could not see it, you could feel it, you could hear it. Something unusual was about to happen in nature and the balance of the world was different. It is almost an eerie stillness. The animals were quiet, the atmosphere felt different you just knew, this isn't a regular afternoon.

The same holds true for tornadoes. Having been raised in southwestern Ohio, it was normal to have the little "watch" symbol in the bottom corner of the TV every afternoon. It was so expected, you really didn't see it anymore. But if you went outside, you could feel that eerie stillness in the air, the quiet of the living creatures and you knew...get to the basement.

And now, as Hurricanes are roaring about in the Caribbean and Gulf, I am told the same stillness is in the air. I'm sure some one with knowledge of these things could explain why.  In my mind, I'm thinking all the motion is being pulled in to the monster storms before they release their wrath on the landmasses, big and small, in there path. Harvey has already done it's deed to Texas, and now Irma has My Island in it's sights looking to be close or a direct hit. My hope is it will move quickly and cause the least devastation possible. Be safe to all in the paths of these natural phenomenons.  May your lives be spared, and your homes be safe.

Chicago,  Chicago...what a wonderful town!

It took me another 6 weeks, but here finally, is the low down on a lovely long weekend in Chicago.  I think I want to call this a true walking adventure. Every one seems to be in to their steps these days, how about 58,791  in 4 days!  What weekend in Chicago would be complete with out a trip to Harry Carey's.  My friend and I had lunch there after a mid day arrival.  It was a great atmosphere. Fun collectibles hanging around the building and as a bonus the food and the prices were good. That evening we went to the Second City Comedy Club and saw their political satire, "The Winner of our discontent." I thought it was quite funny.

Saturday, the big event was to go to the Memorial Day Parade. I've been traveling in a few cities on Holidays before and thought it would be fun to see how they celebrate. I wasn't disappointed. The parade was a long one. With many different bands and military groups past and future (ROTC) represented.

After the parade we made our way down to the River Walk. The city has done a great job of creating a lovely area downtown with restaurants and pubs along the Chicago River where people can enjoy the environment and grab a water taxi if they need to.

Picture
We decided to go on a Architecture River Cruise. It was a great way to get to see the many different styles of buildings as well as hear stories about who had designed them and when they were built. There were many buildings that have been re-purposed. With the changes in manufacturing, what was once an old factory is now a much sought after apartment building. According to our guide, Mrs. O'Leary's cow didn't start the Great Chicago Fire.

Then it was on to Navy Pier. Situated on Lake Michigan it was a lovely environment. There were rides for kids and shopping for adults, all right along the Lake with a nice breeze and a fun environment. We went to a restaurant called Chango Loco for a late lunch early dinner.

Our next day was our last full day, so we tried to fit in all kinds of things. Again with our feet as out primary mode of transportation we made our way first to Millennium  Park to see "The Bean". It's real name is Cloud Gate. What an interesting piece of modern art. It's so interactive yet has no technology. Just a big reflective surface shaped like a bean!
Picture
From Millennium Park we walked through Grant Park to Lake Shore Drive to Shedd's Aquarium.  The line was long so we decided to hop a taxi and go to the Museum of Science and Technology. There was so much to see! We hoped a taxi to Chinatown for lunch. Then just in the nick of time found a taxi back to our hotel to avoid a downpour! Phew!  It was time to rest the tired puppies a little before we headed out again to peruse the Magnificent Mile.  We went in a few places including The American Girl store, Ghirardelli Chocolates and the Garret Popcorn Store.  We stopped at the Rock Bottom Brewery for a small bite to eat before calling it a night. What a day we had seen so much and walked just over 10 miles in ONE DAY!
I don't think I saw or did everything there is to do in Chicago. But I sure did have a great experience. I would highly recommend Downtown Chicago for a Spring or Fall long weekend. I think I'd skip it in the winter for sure!

Medical Malpractice

I don't think this post will be what you might expect. You may not recall, but when I flew the beginning of February there was a couple with 3 large "service dogs" on my flight. The dogs were very well behaved, the humans, not so much. Well, I'm beginning to think there is a pattern here.  On my flight home yesterday a gate agent boarded the plane and asked the women next to me about the dog she was traveling with. In my opinion he was not rude at all. She was very defensive and called  the airlines customer service immediately. She didn't even hand the man her documents. Just called and started complaining about how he was treating her. Honestly, the dog was a bulldog and should probably not have been on the plane as that breed is indeed on the list of banned breeds. The dog had no service vest, or obvious tags. It bit at it's owner twice when she shoved it down off her lap while she slept and the dog was discontent. Even climbing on the center arm rest. I emailed the airline because she told whomever she reached on the phone that the gate agent was rude. He was not. People always take time to complain, never to compliment. I am all about people who truly need service dogs, but the Doctors who are committing Medical Malpractice so spoiled self centered people can take pets along for free are getting out of control. I actually know people who have done this! 100% do not need the dog, but hey now it flies for free and they don't have to pay for a kennel. I for one would like to go back to the days of pets being cargo. I love my dog, but he does not need to be on a plane, at the grocery store or on vacation with me.  I am sorry for the gentleman that this women was so rude to. He was doing his job. I actually did give the woman the same lecture. I told her to put herself in his place, the paperwork did not appear to be in order. It was his job to ask, and he did. Just because she called earlier, doesn't mean it will be okay. Have your documents ready and be prepared to show them as a traveler in society today that is how it is.  Don't think because you got your dog on the plane you are above being asked for proof. Airline staff actually have our lives in their hands with MUCH bigger issues. Leave the pets at home folks. Learn to handle life on it's own, unless you truly need a service dog. Then I  am 100% in your corner.  Service dogs are a right, not a privilege get it straight. Service dogs behave in a very specific manner. They don't bite, climb and walk around discontent. They stay with their owner and care for them.  They are highly trained aides for many people with a wide variety of real needs. Fake news, Fake ailments, Fake people...sad, sad, sad.

Spring is trying to Spring!

I see the buds starting to open on the trees, crocuses, tulips and hyacinths are pushing up through the ground and blooming...Spring has Sprung!  I love this time of year, it's full of new beginnings for nature and people.  I have a touch of spring around the house, some tulips in vases. Last weekend the windows were all open and the fresh air was flowing through. And today, the first roll of thunder for the year. There is something about the beauty and power of nature that just brings a smile to my face. I guess that's been a constant theme since I started writing these little tidbits. It's been a very busy and productive winter, I'm looking forward to the change that comes with a new season. Busy takes a different turn...more towards the outdoors.

The not so seedy side of Vegas

Well so the story goes...what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. I don't really think that's true anymore in our age of social media and immediate communication about everything. What I discovered, just a few minutes from the glitz and flashing lights of down town Vegas was nature! A lot of beautiful rock formations and it was wonderful. I hadn't realized it was such an easy short drive to find this beautiful National Park. Another thank you to the powers that be that had the foresight to save our lands from total destruction as humans surely would have done if not reminded that nature is important to appreciate and retain.  I've been to Vegas now 3 times, and I have to say this was one of the best times I ever had. Taking in more than just the glitz and glamor of what the town has to offer. Hoover Dam...also a short distance from downtown. What an amazing feat that was to accomplish in the time it was done. 24 hour shifts, hundreds of people working together, in the end creating a water way that provides from Nevada all the way to Mexico. Allowing land that would otherwise be uninhabitable to be thriving metropolises as well as farming communities. Truly an impressive sight to see. The water levels of Lake Mead are down, and have been for 10+ years now. You can see the water line distinctly. Hopefully this is just a temporary situation and not a sign of the future.

Island Guys (Notice it does not say men)

2/10/2017

So this trip turned out not to be as it was originally planned. My true confession: I was seeing an Island guy. Just so it's clear, I'm not anymore. I believe in my heart of hearts he cared or maybe even cares about me. But by mid day on day 2, I knew he was not going to show up. That for whatever reason he would be a no show for the entire trip. This was not something I went into lightly or uninformed about. I did my homework on him, the funny part is I know so much more about him then he has a clue that I know. When you boast about being the only person on a small island with the name that you have, well for a detective like me...I will get the information. I didn't want to know anything to harm him with, just to protect my self. He didn't own a boat or work at a resort, he works for the government. Friends of my friends that have been coming to the island for 20+ years knew him and verified his employment and the reality that he had only one child. Not the typical family situation for an island guy. I'm sure, no I know...it all started as hitting on the american woman a very common occurrence, but it was more than that after he took 2 trips to visit me in the states. It wasn't "real" but it was more.  Part of me even wonders if he no showed to set me free. It could have been handled much better. Honest communication would have been the way to go, since that is what I told him from the beginning over a year ago! Just tell me when it's over. Guess he couldn't bring himself to truly say goodbye. So I spent the first 4 days with my dear friend digesting the reality that I would be flying solo with no safety net in a foreign country for 4 days (my mom is going to freak!) My friend helped me through, gave me all the info I needed to survive in the cold cruel world and actually have the time of my life!  Last July I had visited the island to spend time with him, this trip was 10 times better. Who knew the island would be even better with out you! I did what I wanted, when I wanted. There were no concerns of who was watching, island guys don't like their island friends to know they are "seeing" any one. Perpetually attempting to appear single is the way they generally like to be. It's a culture or an attitude. I'm not judging, I'm describing. Having been to the island now 3 times, I had gotten familiar with a lot of general areas so I was good to go more or less. Just had to settle in and get my bearings. So what does a self respecting SINGLE woman do on the Island of St. Maarten/St. Martin for a week? Here's what I did. And I had a ball!  I met people from all over the world. Folks with interesting stories to share. Lifestyles so different from my own. It was wonderful. I will do my best to recount what I learned from these great experiences.

Day 1 Arrived on the beautiful island. Got the chance to watch the Sunset at Simpson Bay. Afterward we went to  SkipJack for dinner. They are known for their seafood. Mmmm, really fresh seafood.  Then we went to  Toppers, and ended the evening at Soggy Dollar for Latin Dance Night.

Day 2  What a lovely day in Grand Case, on the French side of the island, at Rainbow Cafe. The beach here is very narrow. But it's calm and quiet. Basically if you eat lunch at the restaurant you do not have to pay to rent the beach chairs. Lunch at a French restaurant? Only if I have to!  I had a salad, La Crispy Chevre: Mesclun Salad, Goat Cheese crusted to corn flakes, honey and crispy bacon. We had dinner at Jimbo's. Fresh grilled shrimp fajita's. This island does not lack quality cooking anywhere!

Day 3  My Friend I was visiting SXM with had rented a car, so we did the French Beaches while she was still there. Today Palm Beach SXM Bar,  Orient Beach, no not the nude beach. No one wants that to happen. It did involve a French restaurant again.  Today what a true treat, La Salade Exotique de Langouste et Gambas: Exotic Lobster and shrimp salad, Caribbean and citrus fruit with basil.  When I say Tres Bien! I truly mean it. What a wonderful salad. Orient Beach is well known. Many people go here from cruise ships when they visit St. Maarten. For some it's the nude beach, for others it's just the location, and what a fine location it is. The seas were a bit rough this day.  It wasn't very crowded where we were. I walked down to the north end of the beach and passed by some abandoned property. When I returned I asked my friend what it was. She told me the little shacks and building were the ruins from Boo Boo Jam. It used to be one of the hottest night spots around. It was never repaired after a fire many years ago.  Tonight we had Italian at a new restaurant Sale & Pepe located on Welfare Road in Simpson Bay.  A very nice meal, with amazing ambiance and lovely presentation.

Day 4  Today was the day I had to prepare to be on my own. Phew! Okay I can do this! My friend and I had breakfast at Bon Appetit, just up the hill from the resort. A cute outdoor cafe, with a nice menu.  Just after lunch, I was truly flying solo. Tonight I stayed in my comfort zone and went to Toppers.  Having been to the Island for so many years, my friend, and now me, by association, is well known, especially here! So this seemed like the right place to start. I had dinner and stayed for the evening. Hung out in my corner seat looking at the street where the music and karaoke are preformed. It was a fun night. Of course the usual suspects passed through, and a few new ones. It was fun! I danced, sang and had a BLAST!

Day 5 Today was a busy day. Well okay how busy can you be on vacation. I had to move to a different room, as I was now in my own unit. The resort was very accommodating about giving me access to the new room so I could enjoy the day by the beach or the many pools. Thank you Simpson Bay Resort for treating your guests so well. I decided to have dinner at Skipjack's again. Best seafood on the Island! Then it was time for  Toppers again. My corner chair at the bar was taken so I set up at a table in the corner by the DJ. After about 20 minutes a guy came in looking for a spot I invited hi to share my table.  He was a yacht engineer who lived on the Island. Shortly a friend of his arrived, a woman who hired people to work on yachts all over the world. She had also been a stewardess on private planes. They were fun people.   More "yachtis" showed up later. A term I had never heard before.  Another evening of dancing and singing and learning about other ways of living. Walking back to my room a  security guard and island guy from Jamaica struck up a conversation. He tried all the usual lines, but...well I've learned my lesson, that wasn't going to happen again.  He was actually interesting to talk to.

Day 6 Today was the main event: Super Bowl! I don't know why, but ever since last year when my island friend had sent me pictures of watching super bowl on the beach, I wanted to be there. So this year, I WAS THERE. And what a great atmosphere it is indeed. I had chosen to view the game  at Buccaneer Beach Bar a long time ago. What a set up! Multiple big screen TV's with lounge chairs on the beach as well as covered seating and reserved tables throughout the open bar.  I went to the bar shortly after arriving and ordered a Malibu Bay Breeze. The gentleman after me, ordered the same and a pizza. We discovered that we were both there alone with out reservations. We chatted for a while and his story was another amazing way to live.  He was from  Newport, Rhode Island. Every year he sales a Sail boat down to St. Maarten then lives on it and sales around the islands for 6 months, then sales it back north. His family flies in to visit with him. We snagged a reserved table that wasn't supposed to be ours, but when the people didn't show up it was given to us. He kindly shared the pizza and bought me a drink. What a game, what a fun night. New England...you can never count them out.

Day 7 Today I hung out at the pool in the morning then went to Phillipsburg on the bus trip to look for an ankle bracelet. St. Maarten is a Duty Free location. You can get really good deals on jewelry, alcohol, cigars...you get the idea. I found exactly what I was looking for, white gold with diamonds. They " threw in" a second one with semi-precious stones. The diamond one belongs to my oldest daughter one day. She told me the following not to long before I left on this trip: I AM A DIAMOND, NO ONE SHOULD TREAT ME LIKE CUBIC ZIRCONIA!  I wear it every day just incase I start to forget. I went to Isola for dinner, a cute Italian restaurant also just by the resort. After dinner it was time for live music. I went to the  Red Piano  to listen to Church on Monday. What a great rock and roll cover band. I met man who is from Canada, Toronto area,  that is a  teacher at the "CIA" on the island. (Caribbean International Academy) He has a 2 year contract with the school. So he lives on the island for the school year, then goes home for the summer.  He plays guitar and is a huge classic rock fan.  I ran into my security guard friend again, at the security gate that was just up the hill from the Red Piano. There was a  big to do at Red Piano after the show, some one , (an American from New Jersey that had no papers for his vehicle or drivers license) hit 3 parked cars and tried to leave the scene. The road up the hill had to be closed while the police investigated.

Day 8 My last full day and night on the island. I had done something I hadn't done in a very long time, I RELAXED! I read 3 books. Tonight I went to the Greenhouse for dinner and had a Bang Bang Shrimp Wrap, It was delicious. I spent the next 6 hours in my corner chair at the bar at Toppers. I know what you must be thinking...How drunk did I get? Well, not at all. I don't really drink that much. More bottles of water than alcohol were consumed I assure you. Shortly after I arrived a  man who had traveled 36 hours from Malta sat down. He was actually British and was there to work on a  short term contract installing IT/Communications networking.  After he left one of the regular local guys sat down and started his usual routine. I told him it would get him no where with me. Always with a laugh and a smile. He kept prodding so finally, without naming names I let him know what had happened this week: The Great disappearing act of 2017. He backed off his usual hit on woman routine and turned in to a decent guy, even bought me a red rose from the flower vendor and said, you are beautiful, it will all be okay. Of course I knew that already, but it was nice. All of the folks: Horse (The bartender extraordinaire who can mix a drink, take your order AND sing reggae all at the same time, Big John the strong silent yet kind security guy, and the owner Topper were really on their game tonight. After the local left, an Italian gentleman sat down. He had just arrived today with 3 friends. His friends were sleeping off the travel, but he wanted to have fun. So we shared some laughs and danced for quite a while. It was an amazing night. Just what I needed! I walked back to the resort  about 1:15 and ran in to my security guard again. I stayed out talking to him until 3 am. He tried his usual routine. It got him no where. In the end...he was really a fun guy to talk with about life. He drives a  Taxi during the day  as a second job. Most of the men on the island have 2 jobs just to pay their bills.  He shared about his life. It's just not easy to make a living on an island with so many competing for the same jobs.

Day 9 It was time to go home. I snuck in an hour by the pool before finishing the packing and leaving my room. I had a couple hours to kill so I did the dreaded catch up on email. Something I hadn't really thought much about in 8 DAYS! I caught a quick ride to the airport and hoped a snow storm would cancel my flight. No such luck! While riding the airport bus from the terminal to the plane I noticed a man with a Chelsea Soccer Club shirt. I asked him if he liked the team. He said he had been to a game in England. So I said, look I know it's random, but I have a Chelsea Mug that was for some one I didn't get to see. Would you like to have it? I gave him the tea mug. It has a good home. If I had the shirt with me and not in my checked luggage, I would have given him that too.  Yes, the island guy loves soccer. These were his Christmas gifts. Good things from bad.

I had noticed a couple in the airport with 3 large dogs and they were seated in the row behind me. When a third person was seated there, they complained...so wait you can bring 3 large dogs on a flight and not pay for them but children over 2 have to have a seat??? How is that correct? The dogs were well behaved, but umm... I don't understand this at all. They ended up in the prime bulkhead seats at no additional cost.  Oh and the best part of the people with the dogs...after we de-planed, walking through the carpeted halls of the airport...the poor dog had to go to the bathroom. I'm talking #2!  This woman actually yelled at the dog? Umm, your yelling at the dog? Some how I think this is a different type of animal cruelty. That poor doggie had no desire to be on that plane. Selfish humans! Sorry brief digression to the absurdity of airline travel these days.

So my 9 day, 8 night trip to the Fabulous Friendly Island of St. Maarten/St. Martin didn't go exactly as planned, in the end it went better!!!! "Don't worry about a thing, every little thing is gonna be alright." I believe you Bob Marley, I really do.

Where to go

1/24/2017

Every year in January I print out a 12 month calendar and start plotting my travel plans for the upcoming year.  I am trying to figure out what my BIG trip this year will be.  I have lots of travel plans already, things I will talk about as they happen this year.  I am going through a list of places from  Northern Arizona to Europe. I have to elicit the help of my potential travel buddies and see what they are up for.  I'm booked up until end of summer, so I guess it's a fall adventure and maybe something for winter. For the first time I am considering going away over the Christmas Holidays. My children are all over the country, we were all together in 2016, so that won't happen again for 2017; too many miles between us.   One year we were all together in Germany for Christmas!  What an amazing time and place to be for Christmas. I won't ever forget it. Many countries actually still observe the Holiday the way it was meant to be. Businesses are closed Christmas eve, Christmas Day and many even the day after. I remember walking around the town where my daughter lived in a new fallen snow, and it being so peaceful and quiet. Serenity, I like to find that when I travel.  Hmm so many things to think about.
